Salmonella enteritis

**Definition:** This refers to inflammation of the small intestine due to infection with nontyphoidal Salmonella, bacteria of the genus Salmonella, a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Bacteria of the genus Salmonella are rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming and predominantly motile.

**Long definition:** Poisoning caused by ingestion of food harboring species of Salmonella;. Conditions of raising, shipping, slaughtering, and marketing of domestic animals contribute to the spread of this bacterium in the food supply.
