Listerial meningitis or meningoencephalitis
**Definition:** A disease of the meninges or brain, caused by an infection with the gram-positive bacteria Listeria. This disease is characterised by fever, headache, or neurological deficits. Transmission is through haematogenous spread to the meninges from ingestion of contaminated food. Confirmation is by identification of Listeria from cerebrospinal fluid.
