Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
**Definition:** A disease of the brain, that is associated with a mutation of normal prion protein genes or spontaneous transformation of prion proteins. This disease is characterised by a long incubation period, progressive dementia, neurological deficits, and is fatal. Transmission may be by direct contact with infected nervous tissue or blood. Confirmation is by pathological examination of the brain.
