Background retinopathy and retinal vascular changes

**Definition:** Background retinopathy is the earliest visible change to the retina in diabetes, characterised by some retinal vascular changes, e.g. the capillaries in the retina may become blocked, they may bulge slightly (microaneurysm) and may leak blood or fluid.
