Diseases of middle ear or mastoid

**Definition:** Middle ear, derived from the first pharyngeal (branchial) pouch; has the malleus and incus and stapes and includes the spaces of the epitympanum and mesotympanum and hypotympanum. The mastoid; normally contains "air"; the lateral boundary of the mesotympanum is where the tympanic membrane is, or normally would be located.
