Preparatory care for dialysis

**Definition:** Preparatory care for dialysis may include the assessment, education and counselling of the patient and carer(s) to facilitate psychosocial adjustment, choice of dialysis modality (including site – home, satellite, hospital) and timing of commencement, identification and management of social and physical barriers to dialysis or specific modalities. This may include preparation of the patient for dialysis access modalities including creation of fistula and/or insertion of dialysis catheter.
