Streptococcus salivarius

**Definition:** A species of Streptococcus that occurs in the human oral cavity and upper respiratory tract. It is a constituent of DENTAL PLAQUE and some strains may be pathogenic if they enter the bloodstream. However, other strains such as Streptococcus salivarius K12 produce BACTERIOCINS and are used as PROBIOTICS.
