**Definition:** A species of Streptococcus that is pathogenic in fish and may also cause disease in humans who routinely handle infected fish. Those who are of Asian descent, elderly, or have chronic diseases such as DIABETES MELLITUS; RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE; or LIVER CIRRHOSIS are more susceptible to Streptococcus iniae infections.
