**Definition:** A genus of Gram-negative, motile, spirillum-shaped bacteria in the Proteobacteria phylum and Betaproteobacteria class that colonize diverse plants. Many species within Herbaspirillum are able to fix nitrogen. Sugars are oxidized, but not fermented.
