**Definition:** Receptor serine/threonine kinase proteins with a cysteine-rich extracellular domain, a single transmembrane domain and a cytoplasmic serine threonine kinase domain that bind to certain members of the transforming growth factor beta family, including bone morphogenetic proteins, and initiate downstream intracellular signaling pathways. These receptors are involved in the development of bone and cartilage and the establishment and maintenance of tissue architecture.
