**Semantic type:** Amino Acid, Peptide, or Protein|Enzyme

**Definition:** An enzyme complex that mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins and is comprised of four core components, a cullin protein that serves as a scaffold, a substrate receptor that recognizes the target protein, an adaptor protein that bridges the substrate receptor to the cullin and a RING finger E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase which binds to the cullin protein, recruits an E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzyme to the complex and promotes the transfer of ubiquitin from the E2 enzyme to the substrate.

**Synonyms:** - CRL - Cullin-RING E3 Ubiquitin Ligase - Cullin-RING-Based E3 Ubiquitin-Protein Ligase Complex - Cullin-Ring E3 Ligase
