**Definition:** A circumscribed proliferation of melanocytes in the skin. It is characterized by the absence of atypical or malignant cytological features, and absence of invasive features or metastatic potential. Variants include the Spitz nevus, halo nevus, blue nevus, and balloon cell nevus.
