**Definition:** A subtype of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with polypoid growth characterized by a biphasic pattern of neoplastic squamous epithelial cells and spindle or pleomorphic sarcomatous cells. The squamous cell component is usually well to moderately differentiated or occasionally may be carcinoma in situ. The sarcomatous component is a high-grade malignancy that may exhibit heterologous elements.
