Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)
The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is an IMO-mandated metric that quantifies the grams of CO₂ emitted per tonne-mile of cargo capacity for newly built ships, setting a minimum efficiency baseline that tightens over time. It applies to specified vessel types constructed after 2013 as part of MARPOL Annex VI's strategy to curb air-pollution from maritime transport.
