Rights and duties in the EEZ (200 nautical miles)

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea defines the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as extending up to 200 nautical miles from a coastal state's baseline, granting that state sovereign rights to explore, exploit, conserve and manage natural resources, both living and non-living, in the water column and seabed. In return, the state must protect the marine environment, respect the rights of other states to navigation and overflight, and cooperate on scientific research and conservation measures.
