**Definition:** Acute serous or mucoid otitis media is a collection of non-infected fluid in the middle ear that has developed as a result of a upper respiratory infection.

**Long definition:** Acute serous or mucoid otitis media is a collection of non-infected fluid in the middle ear that has developed as a result of a upper respiratory infection. The fluid usually resolves spontaneously within 4 to 6 weeks. It is more common in children between 6 months and 3 years of age.
