Periodic paralysis
**Definition:** Rare group of neuromuscular disorders that are associated with defects in ion channels. Characterized by intermittent episodes of severe weakness of the limbs usually after heavy exercise, fasting, or high carbohydrate meals. The three major types of inherited periodic paralysis include hypokalemic periodic paralysis, hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, and Andersen–Tawil syndrome.
